The peer-reviewed journal *Listy klinické logopedie* has published an article on the use of MIU in a hospital setting. The article by cognitive trainer Linda Trpišovská, titled “MIU as a Tool for Supporting Cognitive Functions: A Cognitive Trainer’s Perspective from Clinical Practice,” appeared in the latest issue of the journal (Vol. 10, No. 1, pp. 33–38). It focuses on the Method of Instrumental Awareness (MIA) as part of cognitive rehabilitation carried out in a hospital setting. It demonstrates the possibilities for integrating the method into rehabilitation programs for patients with various cognitive profiles, particularly in the areas of neurological, geriatric, and psychiatric diagnoses. The author draws on her own clinical practice, supplementing the text with case studies illustrating the specific form of cognitive training using MIA. The method is presented as a tool supporting metacognitive awareness and self-regulation, with the primary goal being not immediate performance improvement but long-term functional adaptation.
In an environment where patients often find themselves in the passive role of care recipients, MIA offers, according to Linda Trpišovská, the opportunity for meaningful involvement in their own treatment: “Integrating MIA into rehabilitation programs provides a deeper understanding of how the patient thinks, what limits them, what helps them, and what strategies can support their self-sufficiency in the long term. This approach opens the door to truly individualized and effective cognitive rehabilitation that respects clinical limitations while also harnessing the brain’s potential to learn even during challenging times. Most importantly, however, MIA supports what is often lost in hospital care—the patient’s sense of competence, autonomy, and meaningful participation in their own treatment.”
We believe that the potential of MIA for the healthcare sector, as described by Linda Trpišovská in her article, will begin to be utilized on an increasingly larger scale in clinical practice. If there is interest, we are prepared to provide the necessary training in our seminars and courses.
